The immersive power of television drama

While working out on the elliptical in the basement, I was watching a TV detective series. At one point a leading character declared that she was resigning from the police force effective in November. My immediate thought was that that wasn’t terribly dramatic as that was so far in the future.
It was only later that the absurdity of the thought struck me. Not only was I watching an imaginary character, but the program was filmed 22 years ago and who knows what time of year it was when it was first shown.
Clearly non-sensical on my part to have the thought, but perhaps sobering to consider what this says about the power of visual media to distort our view of reality.
